“One of the most rewarding things to come out of From the Earth to the Moon was the bigger role that visual effects were given in this show,” said Wheeler. Originally, most of the effects were planned as physical model shots with computer-generated enhancements. Most of us grew up in the ’60s playing with toy versions of these craft, and now we are able to play with them as adults,” said Wheeler. “The opportunity to build and animate the space craft from the ’60s was incredibly exciting. For all these effects and more, Area51 used LightWave 3D. Area51 was given the responsibility of creating the shots that could not possibly have been made using live action, including shots of space exteriors, high-angle launch tower sequences, and space craft reentry and parachute sequences.
